Frequently Asked Questions

Why Wax?

Personal reasons for waxing are as many and diverse as our customers, but here are a few benefits that

clients have shared with us:

• Being hair-free feels cleaner and more hygienic

• Reduced body odor, particularly in summer

• Sports related benefits for swimmers, athletes and cyclists

• Improved appearance and enhanced muscle definition

• Increased self-confidence

• Partners prefer the smooth look

• Waxing of intimate areas heightens sensitivity

Unlike shaving and hair removal creams, waxing removes hair by the root. This means it takes longer to grow

back (every 4-6 weeks) and re-growth is noticeably softer and sparser. No itchy stubble, long lasting results

and fantastically smooth skin… what's not to like?

Can I get my (insert body part) waxed?

We'll wax pretty much anything except your dog. In fact, the only places we won't touch are your scalp hair,

beard and eyelashes. Everything else is fair game.

What does waxing involve?

The area to be treated is coated with a thin layer of warm wax, which sticks to the hair and removes it by the root

when pulled off. We use a combination of soft wax (removed with paper strips) and hard wax (which sets on the

skin and is then peeled off by hand) for the most effective and comfortable treatment possible.

Will it hurt?

Your first time waxing is the most uncomfortable. It's most comparable to removing a Band-Aid from your skin. Keep in mind The Wax Whisperer is a highly skilled technician that specializes in hair removal for men and women. As such,

we know a few tricks to make sure it all goes smoothly and most clients agree that the discomfort is nowhere near as

bad as they anticipated. As an added bonus, it also gets easier with every subsequent appointment. Waxing every

4-6 weeks makes the hair grow thinner and finer. Less hair, less pain!

Will it feel uncomfortable afterwards?

Some slight soreness and redness are common temporary reactions, particularly if this is your first wax. These should subside within a few hours - 24 hours, and many people find that regular waxing results in less irritation. It is not

unusual for first time waxes to experience a few pimples on the waxed area.

We highly recommend taking a lukewarm bath in 2 cups of Epsom salt for 20 min/ day directly after a wax for a few days to heal and soothe the skin. Additionally, you may apply an antiseptic cream to soothe and protect the skin.

Are there any conditions that will prevent me from getting waxed?

Contagious skin conditions will prevent us from waxing the affected area until the condition has completely cleared. Clients taking Accutane must wait 6 months after finishing their medication before receiving a waxing treatment. We

are also unable to remove hair from skin that is sunburnt, chafed or broken, or from skin that has been treated

with steroid creams, Retin-A, Differin or other retinoid acne products within the last 3 months.

We do not recommend having your first wax immediately before a special occasion or holiday, as the treated area

may look and feel a little sore afterwards - better to play it safe and allow a couple of days for things to settle down

before surprising your unsuspecting partner.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

We recommend taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen at least 30 minutes before your waxing service, as long as this does not contradict what your doctor has told you. If you are a female client, schedule your waxing service the first 2 weeks after your cycle. Your sensitivity level is a lot less during this time. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can stimulate, making you more sensitive and increase redness after waxing. Pregnancy also increases sensitivity.

Please shower before your appointment (particularly those booked for Brazilian service) and, if possible, gently

exfoliate the areas you are having waxed for a few days beforehand. This helps to remove any dead skin cells

and lifts the hair, enabling us to get as many hairs as possible.

Do not shave or use hair removal creams (e.g. Veet) on the area for at least 3 weeks prior to your appointment, as

hair needs to be a minimum of 1/4 inch long in order to wax successfully. If you are already getting waxed on a regular basis, you will need to leave at least 3 weeks between treatments. We will do any necessary trimming for you on the

day. We suggest wearing a clean, loose-fitting t-shirt if having your back or chest waxed, loose pants for leg waxing, and clean cotton underwear for all Brazilian waxing. In other words, don’t turn up in your sweaty gym clothes and

avoid clothing that rubs excessively.

Can I wax on my menstrual cycle?

Yes. Women who wax on or near their period tend to be more sensitive. Please wear a tampon and take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen 30 min prior to your appointment.

What is a Manzilian, Boyzilian, or Men's Brozilian?

The male Brazilian wax (also known as the back, sac and crack) involves the removal of hair from the groin, penis, scrotum, buttocks and anal area. You may, of course, request that your therapist removes as much or as little hair

as you like, and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

I'm worried about being naked or becoming aroused. Don't panic! Your therapist is not concerned with the size or shape of your body any more than they are concerned with what you had for breakfast - unless it was beans!

We aim to make all of our guests feel as comfortable as possible, and understand that you may be feeling nervous. Some clients experience temporary physical arousal in response to the manipulation of their genitals - this is nothing to worry about and usually subsides fairly rapidly. Guests are advised, however, that inappropriate behavior will not

be tolerated. Please be courteous and professional. Male waxing is reserved for GENTLEMEN ONLY.

How long will the treatment take?

This depends on the area being waxed and the density of hair. Eyebrows take about 15 minutes, legs 45-60 minutes, and a chest or back wax will take 15-30 minutes depending on hair growth. A first time Brazilian takes 30 min for

women, 45-60 for men. We allow extra time for new clients so that you don't feel rushed, but it's also worth knowing

that it gets quicker and easier every time you attend.

Can I bring a friend/spouse/partner with me for moral support during an intimate waxing service?

No. Your Aesthetician is excellent at making you feel comfortable and knowledgeable about your wax experience. Having a third person in the room is a distraction.

How should I care for my skin afterwards?

Brazilian waxing

Keep the waxed area clean, and avoid heat and friction during the next 24 to 48 hours. This means:

• No hot baths or showers (washing with cool or lukewarm water is fine).

• No saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms.

• No tanning (sunbathing, sunbeds or fake tans).

• No sport, gym work or other exercise.

• No sexual activity.

• Avoid touching the waxed skin with unwashed hands and take particular care with cleanliness after using the toilet.

• Wear clean underwear and avoid friction from tight clothing.

• Avoid swimming.

• Do not apply deodorants, body sprays, powders, lotions or other products to the area, other than those recommended by your therapist.

• To soothe and protect the skin, apply an antiseptic cream to the waxed area regularly for 3 days following your treatment. Always wash your hands before applying any product.

• Using an antibacterial skin wash or adding a cup of Epsom salt to your bathwater will help prevent infection over

the next few days, and will also assist the healing process should any pimples appear.

Can I book a massage, spray tan or sunbed after my wax?

Depending on the area waxed, we generally advise first time customers to wait a day or so before having a massage. You must leave at least 24 hours before tanning, which includes fake tanning and the use of UV sunbeds.

How long will the results last?

This varies from person to person. Unlike shaving or hair removal creams, waxing removes hair by the root - this

avoids the discomfort of itchy stubble and your hair will grow back slower, softer and sparser. Because of the way hair grows, it may take 3 or 4 appointments spaced evenly apart to get on a growth cycle that gives best results, but stick

with it and you'll soon see what all the fuss is about. To maintain your smooth appearance, we recommend waxing regularly every 4 to 5 weeks.

What are ingrown hairs and how do I prevent them?

Ingrown hairs occur when a new hair can't break through the surface of the skin and curls back into the pore instead, often resulting in a spot. Shaving and waxing can exacerbate the situation, but help is at hand.

Starting a few days after your appointment, gently scrub the skin 3 times a week using a loofah or exfoliating

mitt. Also moisturize the area every day, which will keep the skin supple and help new hairs to break through.

Exfoliating isn't cutting it? PFB Vanish is my personal choice for preventing and treating ingrown hairs. It works by chemically exfoliating the skin to free those pesky locks and also helps to soothe irritation from waxing and shaving, anywhere on the body. Lucky you, PFB Ingrown Hair Serum is available for purchase in our waxing boutique.

When should I schedule my next appointment?

Most people start to notice a small amount of re-growth after a week or so, but it may take up to 4 treatments for your hair to get on a growth cycle that gives best results. Hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch long before it can be successfully removed by waxing; please do not shave the area between your appointments as this messes with the natural growth cycles, and you'll be left with stubble. To maintain your smooth appearance, we recommend waxing regularly every 4-5 weeks.
